Wayne Rooney & Everton Reportedly Set to Seal Romantic Reunion via Free Transfer in Coming Days
Everton could complete a romantic reunion with ex-wonderkid Wayne Rooney as early as the end of this week, according to a report from the Sun.
The red top has claimed that the Toffees will sign off on a lightning-quick swoop for the Manchester United star after he was withdrawn from the squad that will fly out for the Red Devils’ pre-season tour of the USA on Sunday.
Rooney, who left Everton in August 2004 for Old Trafford, will reportedly complete a free transfer move back down the M62 as sources close to both clubs hinted that a transfer could be wrapped up as early as Friday.
The 31-year-old, who has spent the summer relaxing on a number of holidays with his family, is alleged to have agreed to the deal put forward by the Blues and, once it is ratified, will ensure a remarkable return for the prodigal son ahead of the new campaign.
A Times report on Tuesday had stated that Blues boss Ronald Koeman had reignited his interest in Rooney after landing a number of other key targets this early in the summer transfer window, and it appears to be a mere formality before the forward dons the royal blue jersey once more.
Rooney had been tipped with a move stateside to America’s MLS or to the lucrative Chinese Super League but, with no offers forthcoming from the US, the England international not keen on a move to the Far East and Everton always his preferred option, it seems to be a match made in heaven for the Toffees and their former youth star.
Rooney was pictured in Liverpool on Tuesday as he took part in a cycling spin class at the Rise Cycle studio in the south of the city – footage that will lend further weight to an impending switch – and would provide vital experience and knowledge if he re-joined his former club.
With the arrivals of Davy Klaassen and Sandro Ramirez in his preferred positions on the field, it remains to be seen whether Rooney would start regularly for Everton if he completed a transfer back home.
